How to check, without an engineer, whether your wall passes the Ukrainian thermal-protection standard ДБН В.2.6-31:2016. What the R-value is, and why failing the standard means a cold house and paperwork problems.
What you'll learn
You've been told the wall is "up to standard" — but how do you check that yourself? In this article we explain what the ДБН standard is in plain words, what the number you need to "reach" looks like, and how to confirm in a minute that your wall really does pass.
What "the ДБН standard" is
ДБН В.2.6-31:2016 is the Ukrainian building standard that requires walls, roof, floor and windows to hold heat no worse than a certain minimum. This minimum is expressed through the R-value — the thermal resistance of the structure. The higher the R, the warmer the wall.
For external residential walls you need roughly R = 3.3 m²·K/W. If your wall's R is lower, it doesn't meet the standard.
R depends on the region: for colder areas the requirement is a little higher. The calculator takes this into account automatically when you choose your city.
Why it matters
- A cold house. A wall below the standard lets more heat through — winters will be cold and heating bills higher.
- Paperwork. For new construction, ДБН compliance is a requirement that gets checked. It's better to find out in advance than to redo the work.
- An argument in negotiations. If you're ordering insulation or buying windows, the figure "the wall passes ДБН" is the strongest proof for a client or for yourself.
How to check it yourself
- Open the thermal conductivity calculator.
- Enter your wall's layers as it's built (the material and thickness of each layer).
- Choose your city.
- Look at your wall's R and the "meets / doesn't meet ДБН" mark.
The calculator computes R by the same method as in the standard, so you can show the result to a client or a contractor.

If the wall doesn't pass
No problem — it just means insulation is needed. Add an insulation layer in the calculator and recalculate: you'll see which thickness brings the wall up to the standard. More on choosing the thickness in the article how much insulation a wall needs.
Frequently asked questions
How does the calculator know the requirement for my city? It uses climate data by region of Ukraine, built into the ДБН.
Can the result be trusted? The calculation follows the ДБН В.2.6-31:2016 methodology. The full text of the standard is available in the standards library.
I'm building a house — how do I check the contractor's numbers? Enter exactly the wall the contractor proposed into the calculator and compare. Step by step in the article how to check the contractor's calculations.
