A worked example with real numbers

A wall with condensation near the inner surface

For a thin, uninsulated wall the calculation shows the moisture-forming zone sitting close to the inner surface — hence the damp and mould. Adding 80–100 mm of insulation shifts that zone deeper and raises the inner-surface temperature, so the condensation disappears.
